People graduate from college every year and the most immediate thing that a new graduate has to worry about is getting a job. To be able to get a job, they have to submit their resume to various companies and organizations. Even though most new graduates have limited work experience, it is fairly easy to come up with a resume. The following are helpful tips on how to make a
student resume with limited or no experience.
1. Choose a simple, standard format to use in your resume. Avoid using a fancy or overly complex format to instill in your employer's mind that although you are a fresh graduate, you are a professional candidate.
2. Use a type of paper which is plain or off-white in color and heavy weight. Avoid using flashy fonts and decorated paper. Submitting a resume is different from submitting an art project.
3. Make sure all the information you put in your resume is accurate and updated. Put in your primary contact number and a mobile number and an email address. Consider using an email username with your name on it, and avoid using fancy email addresses which have weird or overly cute usernames like "isolovebuttercookies@blahblah.com." Remember to sound professional even in your email address because it may put your employers off.
4. Your introductory paragraph should include 2 or 3 sentences addressing the employer and telling him the strongest traits you have and why you would want to apply for the position you are aiming for. This introductory paragraph is more commonly referred to as the Objective Statement.
5. Now comes the part where you have to put in your work experience. List any volunteer work, project, or part time work which you have undergone during the course of your college years. Even events and seminars which relate well to the job you are applying for can be considered work experience.
6. Next, list any course work or extra curricular activities you have attended at school if you feel that they are relevant to the job you are applying for. Also include special awards or academic achievements. Try to get reference letters from one or two of your teachers who are included in one or two of the courses you took at school.
7. If you think extra curricular activities outside of school are not important, you are mistaken. Activities like sports, youth groups, or even church groups should be given a spot in your resume. Also, indicate in your resume if you hold a position in these groups.
8. Finally, impress the employers by making a bulleted list of your skills, talents, or even positive personality and professional traits.
Remember that if it is your first time applying for a job, keep your resume to not longer than a page. First time job seekers are not expected to have extensive resumes. Also, make sure that any information you put in your resume is true and not manufactured just so you can impress your future employers. Any experienced interviewer can tell whether or not you are lying and this may cost you your future job.
